Crome's of Kings Lynn, Co Norfolk

Samuel first appears in the Kings Lynn area. Since Kings Lynn is near the border with Cambridgeshire, so it is possible he was originally from that county, however neither the IGI nor FreeReg have any Samuel Crome's born within 10 years of 1745. Samuel's wife is unknown. Samuel would have likely named one of his first children Samuel Jr, suggesting he was in his 20's when Samuel Jr was born, that is, born about 1750. There was a Samuel baptised 1750, Norwich, s/o Samuel & Elizabeth, and while it was uncommon, people did travel such distances at that time. If the 1851 census entry is to be believed, the family of James Neve Crome Sr appears in Bawdeswell, which is several kilometres east of North Elmham, about 40km north-east of Barton Bendish, where the family appears the next year. James & Susan married in West Dereham, a few km west of Barton Bendish.

Crome's of Great Yarmouth Region

There are scattered BMD events in Great Yarmouth back to the 1500's, however the parish records prior to 1800 are in an extremely poor state, having suffered serious water damage. It is possible that the following families were part of a contigious family that resided in Great Yarmouth back to the 1500's, however Great Yarmouth was a Norfolk melting pot, with people from all over Norfolk moving there over the years, often only staying a generation or two before moving abroad.

This earlier generations of this family group is from secondary sources in the IGI & I have some doubts about it. Details on Robert of Rollesby are more reliable, comign from PR's. Rollesby is about 7km north-west of Great Yarmouth.

Robert is one of three apparently unrelated Cromes who was born around 1810 and who settled or was born in Great Yarmouth & whose family was still in Yarmouth after 1850, none of whom appear connected with the Crome's who were living in Yarmouth in the late 1700's (and who also remained there until after 1850). Yarmouth (and Norwich) were and still are melting pots where people from all over Norfolk migrate - over the past 200 years the larger cities in Norfolk have all grown (Yarmouth is the 2nd largest) whilst most of the small towns and villages have shrunk, many vanishing entirely apart from a mark on the map and a few scattered farms and ruins. In 1861 Robert Jr's family was in the Northern district of Great Yarmouth.

1. Robert Crome,[8,27] born 1780's. Married Ann.[8,27] Both Robert & Ann appear to have died before 1837 (not in the 1841 census and their deaths not listed on FreeBMD, 1837+).

John, born 1818, was baptised with only his mother mentioned in the records. Was he illegitimate, did his father die shortly before he was born or was the omission a mistake? All three possibilities are known to have occured. In 1841-1861 John's mother, Ann, was living with him. John's marriage indicates his father was John Crome Sr, although how reliable this is is uncertain, especially if he was illegitimate. It is posible that he is a brother of Robert, born 1807, Great Yarmouth, however John does not name any sons Robert and Robert does not have a son named John. The only similarity, apart from being born in Great Yarmouth, is that both had mother's named Ann, not exactly distinctive. Robert was also in Northern Great Yarmouth whilst John was in southern. In 1861 John Jr's family was in the southern district of Great Yarmouth.

John was called Samuel John Crome in the details given with the marriage of his son, John Jr.[27] John was born Buxton, Co Norfolk. According to John's 1st marriage, his father was Thomas Spinks.[27] Possibly indicating he was illegitimate (or the listed father was a transcription error). Perhaps the son of Martha Crome, d/o James & Ann of Hevingham, Co Norfolk. Martha had at least one known illegitimate child, Thomas, baptised 1811. If Martha later married Thomas Spinks, she died before 1841. There were two Thomas Spinks in the Aylsham district, born between 1780-1790 in the 1841 census who could have been John's father. In 1861 John's family was in the southern district of Great Yarmouth.

Crome's of Aylsham Region
(And the area between Aylsham & Norwich but not including the satellite villages just to the north of Norwich)

Please note that that the generations prior to 1800 are somewhat speculative (moreso in some case that others). Records appear rather patchily in this area. The large number of missing events presumably having occured in neighbouring parishes that have not been indexed &/or the records from the relevant parishes are fragmentary (as is common elsewhere in Co Norfolk). While there were Crome's in Havington in 1851 and after, they were not part of this following group, which appears to have completely vanished from Co Norfolk by 1851. Possibly related to James was Thomas Crome, who's wife, Rachel, died & was buried 1712, St Michael, Aylsham.[21,23] Thomas & Rachel married 24/9/1696, St Bartholomew, Heigham, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[8,21] Thomas may have been a son or brother of James, below. Crome's of North Walsham Region

Possibly from Erasmus line of North Walsham c.1600. Stalham & Ludham are about 10km south-east of North Walsham, about the same distance from the coast as North Walsham. John appears in the Stalham/Ludham area in 1710 with the baptism of his son, John Jr. I have been unable to find any earlier trace of Crome's in the area, however the surname Crane is not uncommon and Crome may have been a corruption of Crane, locally.

Crome's of Norwich Region

There are no earlier references to a Samuel Crome in Norwich and only one other in Co Norfolk (IGI, FreeREG & Norfolk Transcription Archive) - there was a Samuel Crome, baptised 1668, North Elmham, son of John & Mary Crome. This Samuel would have been 26yo in 1696, which would fit quite well with the Samuel, below, who married in Norwich that year. Samuel of North Elmham vanishes from the North Elmham records after his birth (ie: no trace of a marriage &/or burial in the district) suggesting he moved out of the area, perhaps to Norwich.

John & Stephen are probably brothers - they appear in Saint Mary At Coslany, Norwich around the same name and John names his oldest known son, Stephen, a name which rarely occurs outside of this family group (with Crome's, that is). I have been unable to find the baptism of Stephen, either as Crow, Crome or phonetic variants thereof. There is a distinct possibility that this family is related to my own Crome's, who were in Saint Mary At Coslany as recently as the mid 1670's.

John Crome was an artist in the Romantic era. Also known as Old Crome to distinguish him from his son, John Berney Crome, who was also a well-known artist. The son of a weaver, he was apprenticed in 1783 to Francis Whisler, a coach & sign painter. It is said that he acquired his skills by copying Gainsboroughs and Hobbemas owned by Thomas Harvey of Old Catton, his patron from 1790. The two main influences on his style are considered Dutch 17th century painting and Wilson. Crome went on to become the founder of the Norwich school of painters in 1803. He worked both in watercolour and oil. His oil paintings alone number in excess of 300. Many can be seen at major galleries around the world, including the Tate Gallery and the Royal Academy, but he is also well represented in Norwich itself. He also produced etchings and taught art. Crome's Broad and nearby Crome's Farm, to the west of the River Ant and north of How Hill in The Broads National Park are named after "Old Crome".[39,40,41]

The earliest generations of this family used the spelling "Crow(e)". Note that there are some unproven links in this family group. The Crowe's of Smallburgh have been linked with the relevant Crome family of Norwich on the basis of the use of the rare forename, Miles. Further, it appears that the wife of Miles of Smallburgh died in Norwich, further strengthening the link between the two areas.

1. Unknown Crow. {Given that Thomas named a son, Miles, and both were in Smallburgh at the same time, it is almost certain they are siblings or, less likely given there're no other Crow/Crome's in Smallburgh, possibly cousins}

1.1. Miles Crow,[8,21] (s/o unknown) born before 1625. Died & buried 1673, St Peter, Smallburgh, Co Norfolk.[21] Married Sarah Panton, 1/5/1644, Smallburgh, Co Norfolk.[8] Sarah died 1681, Norwich, Co Norfolk & buried 1681, St Peter, Smallburgh, Co Norfolk.[21] {John, Thomas & William of Norwich, below, all share a common travel pattern and so there is a strong likelihood that they are siblings. William & John, s/o Miles, are of the right age to match the estimates of William & John of Norwich. Note also that Miles' widow, Sarah, died in Norwich. The likely scenario is that the three brothers moved to Norwich in the 1660's and their mother joined them after her husband died. Note however that the connection between William, John & Robert of Norwich with Miles & Sarah is speculative & should not be taken as fact}

John & Edward were brothers. Their father's name was given in Edward's 2nd marriage (s/o John). I have been unable to find John & Edward's baptism's, nor any details on their parents other than their father's name & occupation. "John" is probably the most common forname amongst the Norfolk Crome's, which doesn't make locating John Sr any easier. There were several families known to have been in Norwich around 1800, but nothing further than that to suggest any connection with the family group below.

1. John Crome,[21] born before 1780. Shoemaker.[21] Married unknown.

According to the 1851 census John was born "Hantingham". No such place exists in Norfolk (or England for that matter). I have been able to find only one other reference to that location (a British Army pension record from the 1800's referring to a soldier orignally from "Hantingham"). John's children were born Holt &/or Bessingham, which are only about 5km west of Antingham, where a John Crome was born within a few years of John of "Hantingham"s birth. Note also that John of Antingham was the son of Martha Crome (no father listed, probably illegitimate) and John of "Hantingham" named his eldest known child Martha. Who Martha's parents were is unknown. The 1700's is rather patchy for Norfolk records. There was a Martha, d/o Jonathan, baptised 1761, Norwich. Jonathan & his family had moved to Marsham by the 1780's. Marsham is closer than Norwich, but still some 10-12km south of Antingham. I have found no other trace of a possible Martha.

The 1807 date is from the 1861 & 1871 census', the 1811 date from her age at death and the 1816 date from the 1841,1851 & 1881 census'. The later date is more likely since she had a child born 1847} Died December quarter, 1888, Norwich, Co Norfolk (77yo).[21] {Listed in 1851 census as a widow with a young son, however if she was a widow, her husband had died before 1841, before any of her children had been born. Likely the "widow" was a legal fiction} Laundress, 1881.[26] Resided 1841, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[30] Resided 1851, Queen St, St Stephen, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[24] Living with her was John Clarke, described as her brother in law.[24] Resided 1861,1871 Mancroft district, Norwich, Co Norfolk (as Esthar Cromb).[32,33] Resided 1881, Hospital Square, Lakenham, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[26]

(g)
Elizabeth Crome, born 1826.[30] With parents, 1841.[30]

Trowse with Newton was a small village near Norwich, which has since been swallowed up as Norwich has grown. The identification of John born c.1788, Norwich, with John Jr, s/o John & Elizabeth of Trowse Newton is speculative. This is the only John born c.1790 in either FreeReg or the IGI parish record extracts who cannot be otherwise accounted for. This entire family group is curiously missing from the 1861 census index, even being creative with wild card searches.

1. Robert Crome/Crowe,[8] probably born between 1730-1745. Possibly the Robert Crome, died 1799 & buried 24/3/1799, St Andrew, Trowse Newton, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[21] {Robert's son, John, ended up in Trowse Newton} Married 1st Mary Margetts, 19/11/1765, Saint Saviour, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[8] {Married as Robert Crowe} Married 2nd Altamyra Cook, 1774, St Margaret, Norwich, Co Norfolk.[21,23] Both Robert & Altamyra were widowed.[23]

Some Norwich Fragments From the 1600's & Early 1700's

Thomas & William may be siblings - they were in St Giles around the same time and both named sons, John, suggesting John may have been the father of Thomas & William. Possibly the John baptised 1594, Saint Michael Coslany, Norwich, s/o Thomas Crome who was originally from Swanton Abbott.

Possibly the William baptised 1643, St Peter Parmentergate, Norwich, s/o Thomas. That would seem a bit too recent, however note it is a baptism date and not a birth date and the children of William, below, could have been his first children. Teen marriages were not commonplace at the time (one generally married only when one could support a wife & family), on the other hand they were not unknown.

Robert Sr may be the Robert who married Agnes Teare, 1634, North Elmham, Co Norfolk. There is no further trace of Robert in or around North Elmham - either leaving the area or dying shortly after the marriage. Robert Sr had a grandson named Roger, a name otherwise occuring amongst the North Elmham Crome's. The two known sons of Robert Sr were likely born around 1640-1645, leaving a gap between the marriage in 1634, but there is no reason to presume Robert Jr was was the first son of Robert Sr named Robert - there was a high infant mortality rate and sometimes two, three and even more children were given the same forename as the earlier ones died in infancy. At least one other branch of the Elmham Crome's settled in Norwich around the time Robert Sr's sons also appeared there.

This family is known mostly from burial records. Where they fit in, if anywhere (they could be Crow's) is unknown. Samuel may be the Samuel born about 1670 who married Mary Offley, 1694. That would, however, eliminate the tentative son, John, of the later Samuel.
