Worldwide Dance Instruction Survey

The purpose of this survey is to ascertain, on a monthly basis, which line dances are being taught in which areas around the world. For those who teach, it is essential to know which dances are being taught worldwide so students can visit another area and be able to get up on the dance floor.

This dance instruction survey was taken from participants on various email lists and other instructors or students who were forwarded the survey by members of the lists. The results of the surveys are posted below.

This survey is open to anyone willing to respond (the more respondents, the better the ultimate results). If you are interested in participating in the survey, simply email a list containing the names of dances taught during the month, along with the name of the choreographer of the dance, and the areas in which the dances were taught, by the 15th of the following month to Dodee (lndancer@aol.com). Please submit results in alphabetical order by dance name and include the choreographer's name, if known.

FAQ

For further information on how to submit dances to the survey, please refer to the FAQ at the end of this page.

From September 1998 to September 2002 Kathy Arrant-Sharpe ran the survey. In October, 2002, Dodee Davis took over. After the first couple of months, there was a change in criteria. Previously, if one teacher taught more than one class in the same city, it was only counted as one teach. Currently, it is counted by the number of different classes to which the same dance is taught.

Note that like any survey, the following is only a sampling and does not necessesarily reflect what is being taught in any one area.

The format of the results should be fairly self explainatory. Dances are sorted by the number of teaches, viz:

19 Teaches

Badda Boom! Badda Bang! Karen Hunn FL-3, IL, MI, SC-2, UK-4, NJ-4, NY CA-3
Brokenheartsville Peter Metelnick & Alison Biggs CA-2, FL, GE, LA-5, AL-2, UK-6, NJ,NY

The first column being the dance title, the next the choreographer(s) and the third where the dance has been taught, broken up into country &/or state/province/county. Location codes are the standard 2-letter abbreviations for US states & Canadian provinces. Other codes are explained in the introduction to the particular survey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can contribute to the survey?

Anyone who has a list of dances taught during a specific month can send in the dances, either to a person who compiles a regional list or directly to Dodee Davis at LnDancer@aol.com.

The addresses of people who compile regional lists are as follows:

Judy McDonald (Canada) judy@danceline.ca.
Jim Potter (Sthn CA) cwdancefun@aol.com.
Gary Clayton (Nthn CA) TheDJDuke@aol.com.
Jim Courville (AL and LA) honkytonkstomper@yahoo.com.
Sue Gordon (NY, NJ, PA, CT) DJboots5678@hotmail.com.
Jo Miller (WA, OR, ID, MT) Josdancin@aol.com.
Martha Ogasawara (Japan) martha@blk.mmtr.or.jp.
Linda Harris (Upstate SC) DanceHarris@aol.com.
Carole Daugherty (MI, OH, IL) Carole@greatlakes.net.
Bonnie (NC) linedancequeen@nc.rr.com.
Christine Bass (FL) Dgirlylinedancer@yahoo.com.
Netty (AZ) DancinNetty@aol.com.
Charles Archer (TX, NM) carcher@cablelynx.com.
George Kiesewetter (Germany) georg.kiesewetter@bootscooters.de.
Dave Powell (Australia, NZ & SE Asia) roots-boots@hotmail.com.

The accuracy and importance of the survey is magnified by the number of areas and teachers represented. If only a few teachers submit their lists, the results are easily skewed.

Can I submit my own dances?

Yes, if you are teaching them, you can submit them using the criteria above.

My instructor doesn't have a computer. Can I send in dances, even if I'm not an instructor?

Yes, if you determine that no one else is submitting those teaches, feel free to do it yourself.

Do I count a review when I really re-teach the dance?

No, if you are doing a re-teach to a class, it is only counted once in a month.

Can I get the results sent directly to my email address?

Yes, just email your address to LnDancer@aol.com and ask to be on the WDI Survey mailing list.

Is there a deadline?

Yes, the deadline is the 15th of the month. It has been moved from the 12th to allow the Canadian and Japanese lists to be completed and submitted to the World list. So the deadline for submitting July dances taught is August 15th.

Is there a preferred format for submitting dances?

Yes, they are copied into a text file, which is then imported by Excel. A semi-colon is the delimiter for each column. So the final text file looks like this:

Name of dance;choreographer;state, country/province abbreviation-# of times taught (if more than once)

Please do not put 1, if it has only been taught once.

Examples:
Electric Slide;unknown;CA
Dizzy;Jo Thompson;MN-2
Jose Cuervo;Max Perry;MN-2, CA

Most of the time spent in compiling the list is in reformatting the entries.
