A Hasell Family of Cambridge City

Could Joseph be the unknown below?

1. Joseph Hasell,[2,3] born before 1760. Married Sarah,[2,3] before 1780. As of 1788 Joseph & Sarah had 5 living children & were listed in the Cambridgeshire Poor Law Papers, dated 1788.[11]

Children of Joseph & Sarah Hasell:

i.

Margaret Hazle, baptised 14/8/1785, St Clement's, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.[2,3,10] Died & buried 1792, St Clement's, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.[10]

ii.

Sophia Hazel, baptised 2/10/1787, St Clement's, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.[2,3,10] Died & buried 1792, St Clement's, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.[10]

iii.

Unknown, born before 1788

iv.

Unknown, born before 1788

v.

Unknown, born before 1788

Records prior to 1800 are fragmentary, especially between 1700-1800. There was an Edward Hasell (1700-1754) living in Cambridge city. It is possible he was the ancestor of the following. Equally likely they may have arrived in Cambridge city around 1800.

1. Unknown Hasell. Presumed to be the father of William, George & John. Given the frequency of use of "William" amongst the children of the three presumed sons listed below, "Unknown" could be William. John is another possibility, but less likely.

A Hasell Family of Swaffham Prior

The children of James & Hannah are speculative, however in the early 1800's they were the only Hasell's in Swaffham Prior. Swaffham Prior is a few km's to the north of Bottisham, however long before this time the Hasell's had left Bottisham (by 1700 in fact). James and his family appear in Swaffham Prior by 1805. Since at least three of his children remain there with him it is likely he moved to Swaffham Prior whilst they were still children (before 1800), unless of course he was born there. Swaffham Prior is somewhat isolated and access is either to the NE via Burwell or to the SW via Stow Cum Quy and Bottisham. There was a family in Burwell at the same time {William & Eleanor, with two known children, Thomas (1785) & Elizabeth (1789}, but nothing earlier until around 1700 - a branch of the Bottisham Hasell's moved to Burwell in 1683 and remained there until at least 1717 (baptism of two sons, possibly twins). James (and William for that matter) could be sons of either of these twins. There were no Hasell's in Burwell by 1800.

1. James Hazell, born 1753.[8] Died 1837, Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire.[4,8] Married Hannah[8] Day, 7/2/1780, Dullingham, Cambridgeshire.[3] Hannah born 1766, died 1824, Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire.[8]

Hasell's of Ely & Stretham

Joseph & Samuel Hasell appear around the same time in the Ely-Stretham area. Samuel first appears in 1802 with the baptism of his son, Joseph Jr. Joseph first appears with his marriage in 1777 at Ely, which is about 6km north-east of Stretham and the seat of the Diosece of Ely. It is quite possible that Samuel and Joseph are brothers given that they appear in Stretham around the same time and their descendants used the same christian names interchangeably. John and Ann appear in the burial records for Stretham. I have not found any evidence of children for this couple however it is quite possible that they are the parents of some of the children assigned to Joseph and Samuel below. James appears in Sutton in the 1780's, where he has 4 children baptised. Sutton is close to Stretham, so he is another possible brother. There is no trace of James or his children in the post 1800 records, which are fairly comprehensive, suggesting this family either died before 1800 or moved out of the county.

The ancestry of this group is uncertain. Parish records prior to 1800 are very patchy (at least what I have access to). There are a few scattered events recorded in the area - two marriages and two baptisms in Ely & Sutton in the 1660's and three baptisms in Witcham in the 1720's. All locations are close by. It is quite possible that the son of the Witcham group, John, baptised 1727, was the speculated unknown father of Joseph, Samuel, John & James. Supporting this theory is the closeness of Witcham to Stretham (& the other areas mentioned) and that John and more significantly, Joseph, are names that frequently occur amongst the descendants of Joseph (c.1760) and Samuel (1768).

Where did Joseph (born before 1705) come from? It is possible that he is part of the Bottisham Hasell's - there was a Joseph baptised in Cambridge city in 1645, of whom no further trace is known. Was he the grandfather of the Joseph who appeared in Witcham? Hasell's are also found in neighbouring Norfolk and Suffolk counties and Witcham (and the other locations) are not far from the borders with both of those counties, so it is quite possible the family below originally strayed from one of those counties, sometime in the early 1700's. Researching the Hasell's in those counties is, however, beyond the scope of this work - I looked at all Hasell's in the county of Cambridge to see which were related to the Bottisham Hasell's, who are of the primary interest.

Samuel Hazel,[2] born 1768.[7] {2}

John and William are inferred as sons of Samuel given their close proximity in the 1841 census (William appears on the same half page and John on the following page - it is possible William (and his family) is living with his father). Joseph is known to be the son of Samuel from his baptism record. Joseph (1791) is inferred to the son of Joseph Sr since Samuel also has a son, Joseph. Jacob is something of a red herring. He was in the area at the right time to be a son or either Joseph Sr or Samuel Sr or even John (he first appears at Littleport, some 6-7km north-east of Ely), however there are no christian names in common. If he is the son of either Samuel or Joseph then he is likely to be Joseph's son since Samuel is probably a bit too young. He could, however, be a stray from Norfolk. Samuel, born 1793, is almost certainly the son of either Joseph or Samuel (locations & christian names). He does not follow the migration pattern of Samuel (1768) and his dob of 1793 clashes with that of Samuel's son, John. Consequently I have tentatively listed him as the son of Joseph Sr, but he could easily be the son of John.

Unconnected hasell Family Fragments

John first appears in Little Wilbraham when he first married. He next appears in Great Wilbraham with the birth of his first child and subsequent children. By 1841 he is again residing in Little Wilbraham. This may just mean that he lived between the two villages (they are about 1km apart) or that he preferred to have his children baptised in the neighbouring village. The two Wilbraham's are accessed via road from Fulbourn, Bottisham and Stow Cum Quy. By this time there appear to have been no Hassell's in the latter two villages suggesting John may have come from Fulbourn. There was a John born 1795, but he is otherwise accounted for. The Fulbourn records seem reasonably complete which may suggest a more distant origin.

1. John Hassall,[3] born 1796,[7,9] John died September quarter, 1891, Chesterton district, Cambridgeshire.[4] Turnpike keeper, 1851.[13] Married Lydia,[3] Plume, 10/4/1816, Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire.[3] Lydia died before 1836. Married 2nd Sarah, before 1836.[6] Sarah born 1801.[7] Resided Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire, 1841.[7] John resided Hauxton, Cambridgeshire 1851.[9] Sarah (Hussel) resided 1851, Six Mile Bottom, Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire.[13] Resided (John, Sarah & 3 sons), 1861, Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire.[13] Resided (Sarah), 1871, Six Mile Bottom, Cambridgeshire.[13]

iv.

Thomas Hassall, born c.1837, Great Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire.[9] With father, Hauxton, Cambridgeshire 1851.[9]

Thomas may be part of the John & Lydia/Sarah group that was in Great Wilbraham for several decades (see immediately above). Thomas was born in Little Wilbraham according to the 1881 census and John was the only one known to have been there. John cannot be Thomas' father since both of John's wives were too old to have been Thomas' mother. Instead Thomas could have been John's grandson.

1. Thomas Hassell, born 1853, Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire.[1] Birth registered December quarter, 1852, Chesterton district, Cambridgeshire.[4] Agricultural labourer, deaf, 1881.[1] Married Harriet[1] Day, March quarter, 1874, Newmarket district, Cambridgeshire.[4] Harriet was born 1852, Dullingham, Cambridgeshire.[1] 1881 resided Dullingham, Cambridgeshire.[1]

Placement of this family group is uncertain. Elsworth is about 15km due west of Cambridge and no other Hasell's are known from the area that far back. John is possibly a son of either William or Richard, presumed sons of John Hasell of Bottisham, Cambridgeshire. William and Richard first appear in Cambridge in the 1540's. Elsworth is midway between Cambridge city and Bedfordshire, where Hasell's are fairly common. John/Johanis may have been a stray from Bedfordshire.

1. Johanis (John) Hasell,[2,3] born before 1550. Married unknown.

Children of Johanis Hasell:

Robert Hassull, baptised 11/11/1617, Elsworth, Cambridgeshire.[2]

Parentage of William is unknown. Harston and Haslingfield (about 2km apart) are about 9km south of Cambridge. Possibly a grandson of the Richard and William Hasell who appear in Cambridge in the 1540's. No listed sons so it would seem this branch died out.

1. William Hasell,[3] born before 1590. Married Jone, 7/10/1610, Harston, Cambridgeshire.[3]

Children of William Hasell and Jone:

i.

Stow Cum Quy is a few km west of Bottisham so it is almost certain that this family group is closely related to the Bottisham Hasell's. Christian names suggest that the "Unknown" may be John, baptised 28/2/1601, Bottisham, son of John & Alice Hasell. John, who married Ann Dabny, was likely born around 1645. Alice & John may or may not have been siblings. Both were common names amongst the Bottisham Hasell's. There is no obvious candidates for John or Alice in the Bottisham chart so any connection to that chart would have to be their father (there were plenty of males born around the right time, before 1615, who vanished from Bottisham). John, s/o John & Alice, as suggested above, is likely the best of those candidates.

Outwell is 22km north of Ely on the border of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. Due to border changes it now lies in Norfolk, although during the 1800's it was in Cambridgeshire. Hazel's are not unknown in Norfolk so it is not possible to tell whether this family belongs to one of the Cambridgeshire Hazel groups or a Norfolk group. Wisbech is a few kilometres further to the north of Outwell and is in a small enclave of Cambridgeshire in Norfolk. Upwell is 1-2km south of Outwell and also lies in Norfolk today.

Chatteris is 9km north-west of Witcham. The closeness strongly suggests a close connection with the Hazel's of Ely & Stretham, especially if the latter are descended from Joseph & Mary of Witcham in the 1720's.
