Last revision: 6/1/2003 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. Given the paucity of Irish records prior to the 1850's, it is very doubtful if anything will ever be discovered about Joseph and his origins in Ireland, apart from the names of his parents known from his death certificate. What is known is that he was Catholic, a mariner and also literate. His religion indicates he was likely of native Irish origin, rather than Scots-Irish. His claim to have been a master mariner and also that he was literate indicate he was not merely a sailor. Whether he was master, mate or the like is unknown. Records were not kept of mariners arriving in Sydney - many actually jumped ship upon arrival. In the 1830's and 1840's a large number of mariners arrived in Sydney from New Zealand, with the closing down of several whaling stations there. One of those arrivals was a "J. Robinson". Whether this was Joseph or not is unknown. 6. Joseph Robinson.[1] Born before 1800. Married Mary.[1] Resided County Cork, Ireland.[1] Children of Joseph and Mary Robinson: * i.
