KNATCHBULL ----------- A genealogy of the KNATCHBULL family of County Kent, England, from c.1375 to about 1650 and concentrating on my direct line. Other related Knatchbull's can be found in t-knatch.txt. Reproduction for the purpose of financial gain is prohibited. Redistribution of this material to a genealogical listing/service which resells or charges for access is also prohibited. This material is public domain, unless specified otherwise in the sources, and cannot, by international copyright law ("Intellectual Rights") be copyrighted by a third party. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 30/1/2007 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. The Knatchbull family are english nobility. From c.1500 the head of the family had the rank of Baronet. The current head of the family has the rank of Baron and is fairly closely related to Queen Elizabeth II. There is some uncertainity with the mother of Richard (1455) of Mersham. According to the Ancestral File [1], his mother is listed as Catherine Lewknor, born 1467, her father, Thomas Lewknor, was born c.1440. Richard Sr. does have an earlier marriage listed and I suspect that Richard Jr. is the offspring of this marriage and that Richard Jr. married Catherine late in (his) life, if indeed he did marry her. If Catherine was Richard Jr's mother, then the dates given for either (or both) the Knatchbull's or the Lewknor's are in a fair degree of error. The Lewknor's are another noble family and their ancestry was listed in reference [1] for a number of generations earlier than the Knatchbull's. The origins of the surname are unknown, however it has been claimed that Knatchbull is "an old established Kent family which originated on the Romney Marsh and can be traced back at least as far as 1278 when a Clement Nechepol is mentioned in official documents. The name Norton derives from Sir Norton's mother Susan, daughter of Thomas Green alias Norton of Bobbing who was the natural son of Sir John Norton. The Nortons had for many years possessed land in the parishes of Norton, Sheldwich, Milton and Faversham."[2] Lydden is about 2 miles north of Dover on the road to Canterbury. Ringwould is about 2 miles south of Deal on the Deal-Dover road. Saltwood is about 3 miles west of Folkestone, just to the north of the town of Hythe. Mersham is in east Kent (England), about 6 kilometres south-east of Ashford on the A20 (London to Folkestone & Dover). [1] Ancestral File, v.4.17; LDS.
