EASTES/ESTES ------------ A genealogy of the EASTES family of County Kent, England, from c.1495 to 1865 and concentrating on my direct line. Other related Eastes' can be found in the other Eastes/Estes files. Reproduction for the purpose of financial gain is prohibited. Redistribution of this material to a genealogical listing/service which resells or charges for access is also prohibited. This material is public domain, unless specified otherwise in the sources, and cannot, by international copyright law ("Intellectual Rights") be copyrighted by a third party. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 7/10/2003 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. The family name, Eastes, has been spelt in *many* different ways. Eastes seems to be the most common spelling in Kent and also one of the oldest. The Eastes of the USA (and Canada) are invariably spelt Estes. For sake of clarity I have used the same spelling throughout. Even the same individuals have used different spellings at different times. The origin of the Eastes family prior to Nicholas Eastes (1495) is uncertain. There are many myths surrounding the origin of the family, usually linking it to some royal or noble house, but none of these claims have been documented and they all remain pure speculation. Claims have linked the Eastes to the d'Este's of Burgandy, Holland and Italy, among other possibilities. One possibility is that the original Eastes were amongst the Huguenot refugee's from the Spanish Netherlands in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many such refugee's settled in Kent. Alternatively the name Eastes may just be a french-Norman version of East, a not uncommon english name.[1] The Eastes of Kent were frequently associated with the maritime trade,[1] so it is not surprising that almost all of the earliest mentions of the surname (variations of Eustace, Eastes and Estie) can be found in the coastal english counties. With only a few exceptions, which can probably be attributed to variations in other, surnames (eg: East), all the early mentions of Eastes can be found in an arc stretching from Cornwall in the far west of England to Kent in the south-east and north along the east coast to Lincolnshire.[4] The earliest records of the surname are, unsurprisingly, in Kent. Nicholas, progenitor of most, if not all, of those claiming Eastes ancestry today, died in 1533, leaving a wife and young son (no other children are listed).[5] Nicholas' birth has frequently been claimed to have been in 1495 at Deal, Kent. However there is no proof of this. The 1495 date is a guess based on his marriage in 1520.[5] The location is even more uncertain. All we do know is that he lived his last years in Deal and died there.[5] There is, however, an even earlier mention of the surname with the will of Richard Eustace (a known variation on Eastes). Richard died in 1506 at Dover, Kent, leaving a wife, Alice, and an unborn child, both of whom were provided for in the will.[5] Thomas Eustace was the witness for the will and he was likely Richard's brother.[5] Richard and Thomas may have been brothers, or cousins, of Nicholas. Outside of Kent, the earliest mentions of the name (or variations) were at St Columb, Cornwall (1551), Ellough, Suffolk (1562), Epping, Essex (1569), London (1579), Southease, Sussex (1601), Threekingham, Lincolnshire (1627), Bristol, Gloucestershire (1638), Norwich, Norfolk (1655) and St Sidwell, Devon (1674).[4] According to a 19th century genealogical study of the Eastes family, "The Snow-Estes", the family descended from a young man of the Este family in Italy, who in the 1400's got in trouble for a youthful prank, and was send to Burgundy to escape prosecution. He apparently went on to London, thus the beginnings of the Estes family.[2] "Estes Genealogies 1097-1893" compiled by Charles Estes, 1894 proposes another version, tracing the family back to France and Italy via the line of Robert (Este) of London (died 1606). No link was established and it is uncertain just why such a claim was made as it is shown wrong by the chart below. Robert of London was said to be descended from Francesco Esteuse (born c.1440), the illegitimate son of Leonnello d'Este. Francesco was living in Burgundy. In the time of Duke Borso he came to Ferrara, and at Borso's death was declared rebellious by Ercole because of efforts made by his brother, Ericolo, to seize the power. Francesco returned to Burgundy and was heard of no more from that time (1471). As the time coincided with that when Edward conquered England with the aid of Burgundy, it was possible that Francesco followed Edward and after Edward's victory made England his home.[3] This is still partly conceivable if Francesco was Nicholas of Deal's father, although why the son of a nobleman would end up as a simple mariner is uncertain. There are several other variations of this story, all sharing the common theme of the Eastes being descended from the House of d'Este, Italy, and all having an equal lack of evidence. Deal is on the east coast of Kent, about 4 miles north of Dover. Ringwould is about 2 miles south of Deal on the Deal-Dover road. Archer's Court, in Whitfield, is 1-2 miles north of Dover and now forms the basis of a rather "exclusive" housing estate, the perimeter wall and some of the older buildings still remain. Folkstone is about 4 miles south of Dover, on the coast. Sholden, Great Hadres, East Langdon, Ashley and Guston are in the same area. [1] "The English Ancestry of the American Estes", Niel Gunson. Sylvester Eustas/Eastye(Eastes), a fisherman,[1,9] born 1522, in Deal, Kent.[1,2,4] On 10/12/1549 Sylvester, along with John Lamond, appeared before the Consistory Court of Canterbury, charged by the Rector of Deal for allegedly not paying their tithes from their herring catch.[9] Lamond asserted that "in the time of his rememberance .. he paid no tithe", while Sylvester said that in the past two years he and his colleagues had taken two or three "last" (a dozen 6-9 pound barrels) and that "the school of herring hath always comined there away but they had not netteth there to take them well before that time".[9] It has been suggested that the failure to pay the tithe was a political gesture, rather than just oversight, church tithes becoming increasingly unpopular at that time.[6] Sylvester died in 1579 and was buried, 7/6/1579, in the Ringwould church cemetery, Kent.[1,2,9] Married Jone at Deal in 1545.[1,5] Jone/Joan was buried 16/5/1561, St Leonard, Deal, Kent.[1,10] Children of Sylvester and Jone Eastes: i. Ann Eastes, born 2/8/1780 Ashford.[1,5] Died 8/1854,[1] and was buried 15/8/1854, Folkestone, Kent.[24] Married William Back, 19/2/1805 in Folkstone, Kent.[1,4,11] At the time of the marriage Ann resided Hythe, Kent, and William resided Folkestone, Kent.[11] Bond was posted by Richard Eastes of Hythe, Ann's brother.[11] William Back, baker[11] and confectioner,[8] was born 23/7/1780 in Ashford, Kent,[1] and baptised 23/7/1780, St Mary Ashford.[2,3,10] Died 19/4/1855 in Kingsland, London.[1] According to family records William was related to Admiral Sir George Back, the famous Arctic explorer (see, for example [26]). An investigation of Sir George's genealogy has failed to reveal an obvious connection. In 1832 William was a baker and confectioner, living on Dover St, Folkestone.[13] In 1841 & 1851 the family was living at Dover St, Folkestone.[24] Children of Ann Eastes and William Back: i. Thomas Back, born 12/1805, baptised 1/1/1806 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] Married Ann Mary Wolley 11/7/1835 at Christ Church, Greyfriars Newgate, City of London, London.[5] In 1881 Thomas & Ann were living at 46 Lansdowne Gdns, Lambeth, Surrey.[25] Thomas' occupation was listed as "H E I Co Service Retired".[25] Living with them were 4 unmarried daughters, their son, Edward, Thomas' widowed sister, Lydia, and a servant. Children: Frances Ann (1836), Emily (1838), Mary Elizabeth (1840) all St Lukes, Finsbury, London, William (1848) of Stepney, London,[5,25] Edward B. (1849) and Helena (1851) of Lambeth, Surrey.[25] ii. Sarah Back, born 21/12/1806, baptised 13/1/1807 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] Died 2/3/1868.[1] Married William Madison 9/3/1834 at St Dionis Backchurch, City of London.[5] iii. Ann Back, born 12/1/1809, baptised 8/3/1809 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] Died 19/6/1866, Mall House, Hammersmith, Middlesex.[14] (Transcription from a family bible gives 6/1867.[1]). Cause of death was "epilepsy some years paralysis certified".[14] In 1881 Mall House was a mental asylum and it is likely it was the same in 1866 as at this time those with epilepsy were generally placed in asylums. Informant was Mary Hannah, also resident of Mall House.[14] (Mary was presumably part of the staff at the asylum). Married Sir Francis Pettit Smith 2/12/1830, Folkestone, Kent.[4,7,12,24] Francis was born 8/2/1808, at 31 High Street, Hythe, Kent,[17,20,24] and died 12/2/1874,[12,17,20,24] 15 Thurloe Place, Kensington (now the London House of Science Museum),[12,19,24] & buried Brompton Cemetery, London,[12,16] In the 1820's Francis was a grazier (farmer) at Romney Marsh, Kent.[24] In 1834 he was a grazier at Hythe, Kent.[24] In the late 1830's he was a farmer at Gutters Hedge Farm, Hendon, Kent.[24] In 1841 lived Poplar, Middlesex.[24] In 1848 Francis was living St John's Wood, London & he was employed at the Steam Department, Somerset House.[24] Latter 1848 the family was living at St Margaret at Cliffe.[24] In 1855 he was granted a pension of 200 pounds pa from the Queen's Civil List.[24] In 1856 his patent expired and he was farming in Guernsey, Channel Islands.[24] Sir Francis was appointed acting curator of the British Museum of Patents, South Kensington, 15/9/1860,[24] and on 1/1/1861 was appointed as the third curator museum, with an annual salary of 400 pounds, in which position he remained until his death.[22,24] Sir Francis was instrumental in the aquisition of a number of important exhibits.[22] In 1864 he changed the name to 'The Patent Office Museum.'[22] A signed letter survives which was written by Sir Francis on 5/4/1862 to Mrs. Haden concerning news of her husband in India.[23] The letter was addressed from the Museum of Patents.[23] In 1861 Francis was living at 2 Sumner Place with Susannah Wallis, Susannah being listed as his wife (although they did not marry until Francis' first wife died in 1866).[24] In 1866 living Alexander Square, Brompton, 1871 15 Thurloe Place, London, where he remained until his death.[24] His will was proven 5/3/1874.[24] Francis was a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Naval Architects, the Royal Society of Arts for Scotland and the American Institute.[24] Francis was knighted in 1871 for his invention of the four bladed screw propeller for ships,[16,17] for which he received a British patent 31/5/1836,[17,20,24] and which which was adopted by the Royal Navy.[12] The discovery was serendipitous - in 1837 he was experimenting with a particular design when, during the test, half of it broke off yet the ship then travelled significantly faster.[21,24] In May, 1840, Sir Francis fitted and demonstrated his propeller on the 237-ton 'Archimedes' at Bristol,[19,20] which was launched 18/10/1838.[24] The ship had previously been tested at Portsmouth by the Royal Navy, where it proved to be faster than the naval paddle steamer, HMS Vulcan.[24] In 1843 the first naval ship with Sir Francis' propeller was launched, the HMS Rattler.[24] From 1841 to 1842 the Archimedes toured ports in Britian and mainland Europe.[24] The Bristol demonstration sufficiently impressed Isambard Brunel that he fitted the 'Great Britain', then under construction, with Sir Frances' propeller design.[19] The 'Great Britain' was the first iron-hulled ship and, in it's day, was the largest ship ever constructed.[19] It saw service from 1845 until 1937 when it was scuttled offshore from the Falkland Islands.[19] In 1970 the hulk was refloated, moved to Bristol and restored to her heyday appearance as an ocean liner.[19] Brunel initially fitted the ship with a 6-bladed propeller, but that was soon replaced by a 4-bladed propeller in 1846.[19] It is interesting to note that Sir Francis named his experimental ship the 'Archimedes' and also had a grandson by that name. It is probable, in fact nearly certain, that Sir Francis' invention was inspired by the work of the ancient Greek philosopher Archimedes, who, among other things, invented the Archimedes Screw, a device for moving water uphill - the reverse of the propeller. Francis was worn out by the worry of perfecting his invention and this was attributed as the cause of his early death.[12] Francis was also involved in a lawsuit with George Blaxland over who was the inventor of the screw propeller.[18] Whilst the government recognised both claims with monetary awards, Sir Francis eventually received the patent and the knighthood.[18] After the death of his first wife, Ann Back, Francis remarried to Susannah Wallis of Boxley,[12,15] 3/7/1866, St Mary's Church, West Brompton, Kent,[15,24] barely two weeks after Ann's death.[14] Frances and Susannah had been co-habitating since at least 1861,[12] during which time Ann was presumably a resident of the Mall House asylum. There is no further trace (as yet) of Susannah after Francis' death.[15] Children: Thomas Back (1834) of Hythe, Kent, Edward Pettit (1836) of Hendon, Kent, Archimedes Pettit (1841-1848) of Poplar, Middlesex and Alexander Pettit (1848) of St Margaret at Cliffe, Kent.[24] iv. Lydia Back, born 25/2/1811, baptised 27/3/1811 in Folkestone, Kent.[1,6] Married Henry Appleyard, 5/3/1833, Folkestone.[4] In 1881 Lydia was a widow and living with her brother, Thomas.[25] Children: Henry (1834) of Walworth, Co.
